When someone visits your website, they initially enter your database as an anonymous contact. Until the system can identify them, it assigns them a temporary nickname, such as "Purple Turtle" or "Silver Mountain".
Instead of using long, technical ID numbers that are hard to remember, these names give every visitor a recognizable identity from the very first moment they land on your site.
Anonymous Contact is a visitor whose personal details (like name or email) have not yet been captured by Positive User.
Names are automatically generated to ensure every profile in your “Contacts” section is easy to find. You will see these nicknames in the “Contacts” section and within “Conversations” when a visitor starts a chat before being identified.

Each nickname is created by combining a random adjective and a random noun. Behind the scenes, Positive User distinguishes these individuals using technical identifiers.
Every anonymous visitor is assigned a unique browser cookie. That cookie has been assigned a unique attribute called “contact_key”. This is the primary identifier that keeps their data separate and organized before an email address is provided.
The moment a Positive User acquires identifying data (for instance, when the visitor provides an email address), the system automatically updates the profile. The temporary nickname is then replaced by their actual name or email address, leaving all previous "anonymous" activity on their identified profile.
Conversations: When chatting with multiple unidentified visitors at once, nicknames make it easy to stay organized. You can quickly see that "Green Panda" is browsing your pricing page while "Yellow Submarine" is looking at your documentation.
Team Collaboration: Your team can communicate more effectively about specific visitors. Instead of sharing a technical contact_key, a team member can say, "Take a look at the recent events for Silver Mountain."
Behavior Tracking: You can monitor the behavior of specific individuals in the “Contacts” section. This helps you understand what content "Purple Turtle" found interesting before they eventually decided to sign up or make a purchase.
